Perhaps the defining musical of the last decade, Spring Awakening combines an electrifying rock score and genre-defying writing to tell the story of sexual and adolescent discovery. Based on the once-banned 1891 Frank Wedekind play of the same name, Spring Awakening  Silenced and dismissed in the firmly censored world of 19th century Germany, a group of teenagers are forced to discover the truth behind their feelings unaided. They find that through each other they unlock a bold and brave new world – with both beautiful and tragic consequences.

An international sensation and winner of eight Tony Awards and four Olivier Awards, Spring Awakening, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater, and music by Duncan Sheik, broke new ground in Musical Theatre history when it first hit Broadway in 2006 - initially praised by the New York Times as ‘an unforgettable statement’. It received its first major UK revival in a bold new production at The Hope Mill Theatre, directed by Luke Sheppard (In The Heights; The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4).

★★★★★“a spectacular, poignant piece that doesn’t shy away from its talking points. Duncan Sheik’s score is fantastic and coupled with impressive vocalists and great choreography, it’s hard not to rave about.” Frankly My Dear

★★★★  “a terrific ensemble, vibrant, pulsing with energy… all round a pretty brilliant must-see.” Manchester Theatre Awards

★★★★★“this is simply a masterclass in “how to put on a genuinely awe inspiring piece of theatre". Sheppard's direction feels timeless, evocative and cautionary with a design that utilises the best in audience interpretation and a statement that this story could affect anyone, anytime, any place & of any age… [an] intelligent & exciting revival… you’d be a fool to miss it.” Andrew Exeter

★★★★  “an all-killer-no-filler production that quite rightly finished with the audience on its feet.” Northern Soul

★★★★★“There aren’t many pieces of musical theatre where two songs in, you’re already thinking of when you can see it again, but the Hope Mill Theatre’s Spring Awakening is one of those. Packed with emotion and bursting with resonance, it’s s piece of theatre that will grasp you from the first note and have you clinging on until the very last bow." Sincerely Amy

“With a hardworking young cast and very strong production values for what is such as small theatre, this production of Spring Awakening has a lot of merit and will no doubt go on to have a brilliant life elsewhere in the country” BroadwayLover99

“exhilarating and touchingly poetic, Spring Awakening is an in your face, provocative and exquisitely beautiful production” Manchester Evening News

“Spring Awakening really is an incredible production which at times has you feeling you are not in Ancoats but actually watching a new show on Broadway. Anyone who sees it is sure to witness something special – a powerful, punchy theatrical experience not to be missed.” Manchester's Finest
